Kimi API Internet Search Pricing

Kimi models can look things up on the internet before they answer. In the API, that costs a small search fee plus the tokens for the results the model reads, and the results are often the bigger cost. This page shows what a searched answer really costs, compares the old built-in search with the newer Search API, and explains how to switch.

BILLING

How a $web_search search is billed

1. The model decides to search

It replies with a tool call instead of an answer. Your app sends the call back unchanged.

$0.005 search fee

2. Kimi runs the search

The results are added to the conversation. The number of tokens is shown in the tool call's arguments.

Results billed as input

3. The model answers

It reads the results and writes the reply, billed at the model's normal prices.

Normal input + output

Moonshot's formula: total_tokens = prompt_tokens + search_tokens + completion_tokens. If your app stops after step 1, only the $0.005 fee is charged.

REAL COST

What one searched answer costs

Moonshot's guide shows one real $web_search answer: 13,212 prompt tokens (13,046 of them search results) and 295 output tokens. Here is what that costs on each model.

ModelTokensWith $0.005 feePer 1,000 answers
kimi-k3$0.0441$0.0491$49.06
kimi-k2.7-code$0.0137$0.0187$18.73
kimi-k2.7-code-highspeed$0.0275$0.0325$32.46
kimi-k2.6$0.0137$0.0187$18.73

On a small screen, swipe the table sideways to see every column.

The results cost more than the search. On Kimi K3, the tokens are about 9 times the search fee. On Kimi K2.6, about 3 times. Cutting the results is where the savings are.

Our arithmetic from Moonshot's example and list prices. On Kimi K3 the output would also include its thinking, so real output is often larger.

CALCULATOR

Old vs new calculator

Compare the monthly cost of $web_search with calling the Search API yourself and sending only the short results.

$web_search, a month$0
Search API, a month$0
Difference, a month$0

Both include the question (200 tokens) and the answer (300 output tokens) at list prices, over 30 days. The old default of 13,000 result tokens follows Moonshot's example. The new default of 1,500 is our assumption for five titles, links and snippets; measure your own. Moonshot's guide says Pro's ranked passages usually cut tokens by about ten times compared with full pages.

CHOOSE

Which way to search

Built-in $web_search

  • Kimi searches and reads for you
  • $0.005 per search, plus all result tokens
  • You cannot trim the results
  • Expected to retire 20 October 2026

Search API

  • Your code searches, then passes results to the model
  • $0.002 or $0.003 per search
  • You choose what the model reads
  • Moonshot says it has long-term support

Moonshot also mentions an official web-search tool as a replacement. Its K3 quickstart says that tool is being updated and is not recommended for production yet, and we found no separate price for it.

MIGRATE

How to switch

  1. 1

    Find the old tool

Search your code for $web_search and builtin_function.

  2. 2

    Define your own tool

Replace it with a normal function tool, with a name, description and a query parameter.

  3. 3

    Call the Search API

When the model calls your tool, search with /v1/tools/search and send back short results.

  4. 4

    Test and compare

Check answers and token use before 20 October.

FAQ

Internet search pricing questions

There are two ways. The built-in $web_search tool costs $0.005 per search plus the search results, billed as input tokens. The standalone Search API costs $0.002 per Basic search or $0.003 per Pro search, plus tokens only for the results you choose to send to a model.

Because the search results are added to the conversation as input tokens. In Moonshot's own example, one search added 13,046 tokens. On Kimi K3 that is about $0.04 in tokens, eight times the $0.005 search fee.

Moonshot's pricing page says it is expected to be deprecated on 20 October 2026. Its web search guide says it retires on that date. Moonshot recommends the /v1/tools/search endpoint or its official web-search tool instead.

No. The $0.005 fee applies only when the model calls $web_search. If it answers directly, you pay only normal tokens.

For the Search API, no. Failed requests, rate-limit errors, timeouts and searches with no results are free.

Moonshot's guide uses Kimi K3 in its examples and says Kimi K2.6 can search with thinking turned on. With the Search API, your own code searches, so any Kimi model can use the results.
