KKimi VS CChatGPT Research K C ? Writing K C ? Coding K C ? Run the tests. You be the judge ✓

Three kinds of work, two assistants, and you as the judge.

How this test works. Both tools change with every update, so a score printed here would soon be out of date. We give you the test prompts, what to look for and what each tool is built to do. You run them and mark the winner. It takes about 30 minutes for all nine.
QUICK ANSWER

The short version

Kimi is likely your pick if

  • You want long research reports, then slides, sheets or a website from them
  • You want open models you can download or host elsewhere
  • You work with very long files or whole codebases

ChatGPT is likely your pick if

  • You want the most widely used, most polished all-round assistant
  • You want memory, image creation and custom GPTs
  • You prefer a company based in the USA

We are a Kimi guide site, so we know Kimi best. We have tried to be fair to both. We are not affiliated with Moonshot AI or OpenAI.

RULES

Rules for a fair test

  1. 1

    Same prompt

Paste exactly the same words into both. Use the Copy buttons.

  2. 2

    Fresh chat

Start a new chat for every test, so old chats do not help or hurt.

  3. 3

    Same level

Compare free with free, or paid with paid. Note which model each used.

  4. 4

    First answer

Judge the first answer. Do not coach one tool more than the other.

  5. 5

    Check the facts

A confident answer can still be wrong. Open sources and run the code.

  6. 6

    Use your own work

Swap in your own topic or code where you can. That is the test that matters.

RESEARCH

Research: tests 1 to 3

Both tools can search the web and both have a deep research mode that writes a long report with sources.

What Kimi brings

  • Deep Research asks a few questions first, then works for 10 to 25 minutes
  • A typical report cites about 26 sources, with the original passage highlighted
  • Save as PDF or Word, or turn it into slides or a web page

What ChatGPT brings

  • Its own deep research mode with cited reports
  • Monthly limits that grow with your plan
  • Memory and projects to keep long research organized

Test 1Quick fact with a source

What is the current population of Canada, and what was it ten years ago? Give the source for each number.

What to look for

  • Are both numbers right?
  • Is there a real, official source you can open?
  • How fast was the answer?
Which did better for you?

Test 2Deep research report

Research the main trends in the electric bicycle market in Europe from 2023 to now. Use official reports and industry data where possible. Give a structured report with sources.

What to look for

  • Does the report have clear sections?
  • Are the sources recent and trustworthy?
  • Open three sources. Do they say what the report claims?
  • How long did you wait?
Which did better for you?

Test 3Compare and decide

Compare heat pumps and gas boilers for a small home: cost to install, cost to run and typical lifespan. Put the answer in a table and say where each number comes from.

What to look for

  • Is the table clear and complete?
  • Does it admit what it does not know?
  • Are costs given with a country and year?
Which did better for you?

Both write good first drafts. The differences show in tone, in how well they follow instructions, and in how much editing you still have to do.

  • Widely used for Chinese-language writing as well as English

What ChatGPT brings

  • Memory can keep your preferences from chat to chat
  • Custom GPTs for repeated writing jobs
  • Built-in image creation for posts and covers

Test 4A short, polite email

Write a polite email to a client explaining that their project will be one week late because a supplier delivered late. Keep it under 120 words, give the new date as 14 March, and offer a short call.

What to look for

  • Is it under 120 words?
  • Does it include the date and the offer of a call?
  • Does it sound like a person wrote it?
Which did better for you?

Test 5Rewrite in plain English

Rewrite this in plain English for a general reader, in two sentences: "The implementation of the aforementioned policy will be contingent upon the availability of budgetary resources and subject to periodic review by the relevant stakeholders."

  • Is it truly simpler, in two sentences?
  • Did it add anything that was not there?
Which did better for you?

  • Did it avoid clichés as asked?
  • Would you keep reading?
Which did better for you?

CODING

Coding: tests 7 to 9

You can run these in the normal chat. If you code every day, also try each company's coding assistant on a real project: Kimi Code and OpenAI's Codex.

What Kimi brings

  • Kimi Code, a coding assistant for your terminal, on paid plans
  • Kimi K3 holds about a million tokens, useful for large codebases
  • Visual coding: build a page from a screenshot

What ChatGPT brings

  • Codex, its coding assistant, included with ChatGPT plans
  • Limited Codex use even on the free plan
  • A large community, so help and examples are easy to find

Test 7Write a small function

Write a Python function that takes a list of email addresses and returns only the valid ones, with duplicates removed and the original order kept. Include three test cases.

What to look for

  • Does the code run without changes?
  • Do the test cases pass?
  • Did it explain its choices briefly?
Which did better for you?

Test 8Find the bug

This JavaScript function should return the average of an array but returns NaN. Find the bug, explain it in one sentence and fix it: function avg(a){let s=0;for(let i=0;i<=a.length;i++){s+=a[i]}return s/a.length}

What to look for

  • Did it find the real bug (the loop runs one step too far)?
  • Is the explanation one clear sentence?
  • Does the fixed code handle an empty array?
Which did better for you?

Test 9Build a tiny web page

Build a single HTML file with a tip calculator. It needs a bill amount, a tip percentage slider and the number of people. Show the tip and the amount per person. Make it look clean on a phone.

What to look for

  • Does it work when you open the file?
  • Does it look good on a phone-sized screen?
  • Is the code tidy and easy to change?
Which did better for you?

FAQ

Kimi vs ChatGPT questions

Neither wins everything. ChatGPT is the more polished all-round assistant with extras such as memory, image creation and custom GPTs. Kimi stands out for long research reports, built-in Slides, Sheets and Websites tools, and open models. Run the nine tests on this page to see which is better for your work.

Both have free plans. Kimi's free plan covers everyday chat with Kimi K2.6. ChatGPT's free plan uses GPT-6 Luna with limited extras. Both charge about $19 to $20 a month for their main paid plan.

Both can write long, cited research reports. Kimi Deep Research asks clarifying questions first and usually takes 10 to 25 minutes. ChatGPT has its own deep research with monthly limits that depend on your plan. Test both with the same narrow question.

Both write good first drafts. ChatGPT can remember your preferences across chats, which helps keep a consistent voice. Kimi can turn a draft straight into a document or slides. The best choice depends on the voice and language you write in.

Both are coding assistants that work inside your project. Kimi Code comes with paid Kimi plans. Codex comes with ChatGPT plans. Try the same small bug fix in each and compare the result and the time taken.

For the apps, prices are close: $19 a month for Kimi Moderato and $20 for ChatGPT Plus. For developers it depends on the model. Kimi K2.6 is cheaper than OpenAI's main model, but Kimi K3 costs more than GPT-6.1 Sol at list prices.
