Kimi Web Search API Pricing

Kimi's Web Search API lets developers search the web and read pages from their own apps. You pay a small fee per call: $0.002 for a basic search, $0.003 for the more detailed Pro search, and $0.002 to fetch a page. Calls that fail or find nothing are free. This page explains every price, the limits, and how to keep the bill down.

Heads-up: the old $web_search tool retires soon. Moonshot expects to deprecate it on 20 October 2026. If you use it, see moving off $web_search. We are an independent guide, not Moonshot AI. Prices are from Moonshot's pricing page and exclude tax.

BILLING

What you are charged for

Charged

  • A search that succeeds and returns at least one result
  • A fetch that succeeds and returns some page text
  • The tokens, if you pass the results to a Kimi model

Free

  • A search that returns no results
  • A fetch of a page with nothing readable
  • Any failed call, including rate-limit errors
Remember the second cost. Searching is cheap, but if you feed full pages into a model, the tokens can cost more than the search. On Kimi K2.6, 10,000 input tokens cost about 1 cent; on Kimi K3, about 3 cents.

CHOOSE

Basic, Pro or Fetch?

Basic, $0.002

Show search results to users, collect links, or process pages yourself. Can return full page text if you ask, which makes results much bigger.

Pro, $0.003

For answers grounded in the web, research agents and reports. Returns ranked passages, a source authority score, and can filter by up to 5 sites and a date range.

URL Fetch, $0.002

When you already know the page. Returns the title and the page text as Markdown.

Pro can be cheaper overall. Moonshot's guide says that when a model needs to read the content, Pro's ranked passages usually cut token use by about ten times compared with full pages. It costs a tenth of a cent more per call but can save more on tokens.

FOR DEVELOPERS

Example requests

curl · web search basic
curl https://api.moonshot.ai/v1/tools/search \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $MOONSHOT_API_KEY" \
  -d '{"text_query": "Kimi K3 release date", "limit": 5, "timeout_seconds": 10}'

The Basic request mirrors Moonshot's API reference; the Pro and Fetch requests are written for this guide from the documented fields. We could not run them against the live API. Keys and setup: Kimi API setup.

MIGRATION

Moving off $web_search

The built-in $web_search tool let a Kimi model search during a chat. Moonshot's pricing page says it is expected to be deprecated on 20 October 2026.

How it was billed

  • $0.005 when the model called the tool
  • Plus the search results, counted as input tokens
  • If you stopped after the tool call, only the $0.005 applied

What to do

  • Switch to the /v1/tools/search endpoint, or the official web-search tool
  • Call search yourself, then pass the results to the model
  • Test before 20 October

Two other notes from Moonshot's docs: $web_search does not work with Kimi K2.6's thinking mode, and the Kimi K3 quickstart says its official web search tool is being updated and is not recommended for production yet. More: Kimi K3 API · Kimi K2.6 API

SAVE

Ways to pay less

  1. 1

    Snippets first

Leave Basic's full content off unless you really need whole pages.

  2. 2

    Pro for reading

When a model must read the content, Pro's passages can cut token costs.

  3. 3

    One question, one search

Merge related questions. Similar searches pay for the same pages twice.

  4. 4

    Sharper queries

Name the company, product or year. Do not retry with synonyms.

  5. 5

    Cache results

Store answers to common searches in your own app for a while.

  6. 6

    Fetch what you know

If you already have the link, URL Fetch skips the search entirely.

Tips 1 to 4 are from Moonshot's best practices guide. Tips 5 and 6 are ours.

FAQ

Web Search API pricing questions

Web Search Basic costs $0.002 per call, Web Search Pro $0.003 per call and URL Fetch $0.002 per call. Prices exclude tax.

No. Moonshot says you are charged only when a call succeeds and returns results: non-empty search results for searches, or non-blank page text for URL Fetch. Failed and empty calls are free.

Basic returns titles, links and short snippets. Pro returns the most relevant passages from each page, ranked, and lets you limit results to up to 5 websites and a date range. Pro costs $0.003 per call against $0.002.

Yes. Moonshot's pricing page says the legacy $web_search built-in tool is expected to be deprecated on 20 October 2026. It recommends moving to the /v1/tools/search endpoint or the official web-search tool.

The search call itself is charged per call. If you then pass the results to a Kimi model, that text counts as input tokens at the model's normal price.

They depend on your total top-ups: from 1 search per second at Tier 0 up to 50 at Tier 5. Basic and Pro each have their own limit, and search calls do not use your chat rate limits.
